Transportation Services Program Statement

Black River Industries (BRI) offers a countywide transportation system that is fully accessible to all elderly and disabled persons. BRI provides transportation, vocational, residential, and day services to persons with disabilities. In addition, the Taylor County Commission on Aging contracts with BRI to operate the Elderly Transportation Program, which affords low cost transportation to elderly county residents. A reciprocity agreement allows elderly and disabled passengers to access either system equally.

1. To provide the safe and timely delivery of passengers.

2. To provide a system that is as accessible as possible to all persons, whether ambulatory or non-ambulatory. Our system accepts all mobility devices including wheelchairs, electric wheelchairs and scooters, etc.

3. To network with surrounding counties and municipalities to improve the accessibility to affordable rural transportation for as many elderly and disabled persons as possible.

Transportation services are based at Black River Industries, Inc. Services are provided throughout the county to all elderly and disabled adults (children in some cases) residing within its borders. Out of county transportation is also offered as part of the Elderly Transportation Program.

The Director is responsible for the overall management of the system. The Facilities Supervisor oversees daily operations, training, maintenance, etc. of the system. Fully qualified, experienced drivers are responsible for handling all routes.

Transportation services are extended to all Taylor County Human Services funded clients of BRI (as well as funded out of county clients). This includes participants of our Work Services, Supported Apartment, Supported Employment, Day Service/Community Integration, and Senior Day Services/Respite Programs. In addition, low cost transportation is offered to non-funded participants of these programs.

The Elderly Transportation Program offers low cost transportation to all elderly county residents, as well as out of county elderly residents who live close to existing routes or can access pick-up points. Daily transportation is offered to and from Medford from various scheduled points throughout the county for shopping, medical visits, etc. Daily transportation is also offered to and from the Medford Senior Center for the noon hot meal. In addition, the Commission on Aging routinely schedules trips to Marshfield, Eau Claire, Appleton, and other cities throughout the year.

Any Taylor County resident, either elderly (age 55 or older), or disabled (regardless of age) is eligible to access our services. The general public is also eligible to access our system on a "space available" basis.

Monday through Friday, 6:00 AM to 6:30 PM. (excluding holidays)

Weekend and holiday transportation is available with prior arrangements.

Referrals to BRI's programs must be authorized by the Developmental Disabilities Coordinator, Taylor County Human Services Department (715) 748-3332, or by the appropriate County Coordinator for all other counties.
