H.R. 5658:

Workplace Choice and Flexibility for Individuals with Disabilities Act

It's time to Speak Up for what we believe in!

A new bill, HR 5658, has been introduced to the federal government to assist people with disabilities. This bill will allow people to continue to choose their place of work to include places like Black River Industries. Currently, many states are choosing to interpret the Work Force Innovation and Opportunities Act (WIOA) to disallow competitive work in a facility setting like ours. HR 5658 will more clearly define competitive work to include the hard work that people provide to their communities in organizations like ours. At Black River Industries, we believe that working to your fullest potential is great no matter where this happens if it is in our building or another local business. Your work is valuable and you should be able to make your own CHOICE where you work. Please take a minute to contact Congressman Duffy, or the person representing your area in the federal government, asking them to support HR5658 and the meaningful work we do at Black River Industries. We need your support to keep this valuable work service.

Please write your congressmen with a personalized story regarding the meaningful work that is done at BRI and facilities like ours, this will make a difference. If you have any questions or would like more information please call or stop in!

Employment First Bill is Signed by Governor Walker!

We are so excited to announce that the Employment First legislation has passed both houses and was signed by the Governor on March 28th, 2018. This bill originated in Medford with assistance from the Medford School District and Black River Industries. Representative Edming was the author and spent a lot of time working with other agencies to ensure that this bill expanded employment options without limiting the important CHOICE of work settings like BRI. We are excited that in the short notice we received we were able to put a small group together to travel to Madison for this important piece of legislation! Governor Walker signed the bill with two boxes of pens and everyone that witnessed the signing was able to bring home a pen and a piece of this historical signing!

Medford Represents in Madison!

It was a great day for the Medford Area to shine as the Medford School District Special Education staff and students, as well as BRI employees, spoke at the public hearing for both the Senate and Assembly last week. What an amazing day! The stories of people with disabilities achieving their goals to work and contribute to their communities literally brought tears from our state representatives. The Employment First bill that was presented and overwhelmingly supported may be accessed on a link on our social media. This bill is important to the employment of people with disabilities in community settings including Black River Industries. As a strong PARTNER with the community we are able to help people with disabilities achieve to their highest potential. It is great to see the school preparing students to be excited about work and to see adults motivated to do their best each day.

Employment First Bill

The New Year is starting off with some exciting legislation! Black River Industries has an extensive history of supporting people as they work here in our building and in our surrounding communities, so it only makes sense that BRI has been a key player in the new Employment First bill! Rep. James Edming has been working with many people to ensure that this bill supports employment of people with disabilities as they make personal choices about work in the community and in organizations like ours. Black River Industries has played a major role in the empowerment of CHOICE in this bill as we believe that all people have a choice in their lives. The Employment First bill encourages law makers, state departments, and communities to support employment for people with disabilities. The public hearing for the Employment First bill will be at the Capitol Building in Madison on January 10th, at 12:30 if you are interested in attending or watching on the Capitol's interactive live television. Medford Schools have space on their bus to Madison if anyone is interested please contact Amber for availability.
