H.R. 5658:

Workplace Choice and Flexibility for Individuals with Disabilities Act

It's time to Speak Up for what we believe in!

A new bill, HR 5658, has been introduced to the federal government to assist people with disabilities. This bill will allow people to continue to choose their place of work to include places like Black River Industries. Currently, many states are choosing to interpret the Work Force Innovation and Opportunities Act (WIOA) to disallow competitive work in a facility setting like ours. HR 5658 will more clearly define competitive work to include the hard work that people provide to their communities in organizations like ours. At Black River Industries, we believe that working to your fullest potential is great no matter where this happens if it is in our building or another local business. Your work is valuable and you should be able to make your own CHOICE where you work. Please take a minute to contact Congressman Duffy, or the person representing your area in the federal government, asking them to support HR5658 and the meaningful work we do at Black River Industries. We need your support to keep this valuable work service.

Please write your congressmen with a personalized story regarding the meaningful work that is done at BRI and facilities like ours, this will make a difference. If you have any questions or would like more information please call or stop in!

Employment First Bill is Signed by Governor Walker!

We are so excited to announce that the Employment First legislation has passed both houses and was signed by the Governor on March 28th, 2018. This bill originated in Medford with assistance from the Medford School District and Black River Industries. Representative Edming was the author and spent a lot of time working with other agencies to ensure that this bill expanded employment options without limiting the important CHOICE of work settings like BRI. We are excited that in the short notice we received we were able to put a small group together to travel to Madison for this important piece of legislation! Governor Walker signed the bill with two boxes of pens and everyone that witnessed the signing was able to bring home a pen and a piece of this historical signing!

Medford Represents in Madison!

It was a great day for the Medford Area to shine as the Medford School District Special Education staff and students, as well as BRI employees, spoke at the public hearing for both the Senate and Assembly last week. What an amazing day! The stories of people with disabilities achieving their goals to work and contribute to their communities literally brought tears from our state representatives. The Employment First bill that was presented and overwhelmingly supported may be accessed on a link on our social media. This bill is important to the employment of people with disabilities in community settings including Black River Industries. As a strong PARTNER with the community we are able to help people with disabilities achieve to their highest potential. It is great to see the school preparing students to be excited about work and to see adults motivated to do their best each day.

Employment First Bill

The New Year is starting off with some exciting legislation! Black River Industries has an extensive history of supporting people as they work here in our building and in our surrounding communities, so it only makes sense that BRI has been a key player in the new Employment First bill! Rep. James Edming has been working with many people to ensure that this bill supports employment of people with disabilities as they make personal choices about work in the community and in organizations like ours. Black River Industries has played a major role in the empowerment of CHOICE in this bill as we believe that all people have a choice in their lives. The Employment First bill encourages law makers, state departments, and communities to support employment for people with disabilities. The public hearing for the Employment First bill will be at the Capitol Building in Madison on January 10th, at 12:30 if you are interested in attending or watching on the Capitol's interactive live television. Medford Schools have space on their bus to Madison if anyone is interested please contact Amber for availability.

The funds from this sale will be used to take everyone to Madison in support of the Employment First Bill that is currently being drafted. Employment is fundamental to who we are and we are so excited to show our abilities!

Extra Mile Employee Award Recipient - Kari Leech, Administrative Specialist

We are so lucky to highlight our Extra Mile Employee, Kari Leech, for always going above and beyond for Black River Industries. The Extra Mile Employee Award recognizes outstanding individual employees of CCB who have distinguished themselves in their work as exceeding the required or expected performance. This award is given to people that embrace their jobs and take each opportunity to learn more. People that earn this award are interested in making a difference by helping wherever possible and utilizing their personal resources to help our mission. The Extra Mile Employee Award showcases these individuals as outstanding in our organization.

Kari has worked at Black River Industries for 13 years! She greets each of our guests and employees in the office with a smile and friendly face. Kari does her best to make our office efficient and well organized. She eagerly takes on new tasks and volunteers to help out as needed. Kari really took her dedication to a new level this year in making our Packers Tailgate Tour a success. She put her "Colts Pride" aside and gave the Packers a grand event. Kari worked many long hours to ensure that the event was a success and that Black River Industries would be known by our community for a well organized, fun event! Her attention to detail transformed our industrial building into party central entertaining over 1,300 people. However, this was no surprise to her co-workers as she is very dedicated to making each project at Black River Industries a success. She has been organizing our Golf outing for the past several years, each year adding a new special touch and creating a well organized event.

Kari received her award at a luncheon held in her honor at P&E Steakhouse on Tuesday, July 25, 2017.

Green Bay Packers Tailgate Tour Wrap-Up!

Well, the Green Bay Packers Tailgate Tour has come and gone. A lot of preparation and hard work went into pulling off this tremendous event. On Tuesday, April 4th we piled about 1,300 people into the walls of BRI. It was a great turnout full of community members, football fans, and dedicated BRI supporters. We could not have asked for a better day or a better crowd!

If you were one of the fans who came out that day, you would have enjoyed a full tailgate style meal complete with BRI salads and signature sides, McDonald’s Hamburgers/Brats, and Tombstone Pizza. Great booths from community members Associated Bank and the Knights of Columbus. A kid’s Titletown Fun Zone sponsored by Aspirus Medford Hospital & Clinics; equipped with inflatables, kids games, face painting, and prizes. Thrivent also was there hosting a football throwing contest and a photo booth. You could even pose for a picture by our huge helmet made of balloons. A friendly Tailgate Cook-Off Competition. Hundreds of people participated in a TV, gun, crossbow, signed football, and basket raffles. A chance for cash with a Money Mania Machine sponsored by WIGM & Wadal Plastics. During the course of the night music was enjoyed by the Wise Guys band. Of course the Packers were on site as well! Those Packers included; Packers CEO/President Mark Murphy; alumni Robert Ferguson, Ahman Green, and Ryan Longwell; and current players Aaron Ripkowski, Jake Ryan, and Brett Hundley. While they were on-site they participated in a question and answer session, threw footballs out to the crowd, and signed 600 autographs for $30 ticket holders. Before leaving they posed for pictures in the crowd. Everyone also had a chance to walk away with some BRI Tailgate Tour souvenirs such as; glass mugs, wine glasses, and sports water bottles.

We want to thank everyone for their exceptional efforts for our event. Thank you to the staff who logged so many hours making sure all of the details were in place leading up to the big day and the time put in there after; whether planning, decorating, or making food. Thank you to the volunteers who came and put in their time helping move things, manning the bar, food area, raffles, autograph line, VIP dinner, fun zone, garbages, and so on. Thank you to the drivers who shuttled guests back and forth. Thank you to the community sponsors and donors who sent over monetary donations, sent basket raffle items, and advertised for us. Thank you to the area businesses who allowed us to use their premises for additional parking. Thank you to Phil & Eleanor's Steakhouse for serving The Packers a mouth watering meal prior to the event. Thank you to Holy Rosary for hosting the VIP social hour. Thank you to the Green Bay Packers for taking interest in what Black River Industries is and what we represent. And thank you to the community for coming out to support us and help support our event! This event was successful because of all of you, so again… THANK YOU!

We want to thank our friends at Sierra Pacific, who really spring into action when presented with the opportunity to build a flower box for BRI's park area. They were able to repurpose wood from their factory to make a beautiful wheelchair accessible flower bed. Sierra Pacific took it a step further and put the finishing touch of soil, vegetable and flower plants in the box.
